National Adoption Awareness Program ~
“Adoption is an Option”

All children benefit from the opportunity to grow up in a loving family, but not all birth families feel they are able to meet the needs of a child born with Down syndrome. The National Adoption Awareness Program provides information to birth families who may be seeking alternatives to parenting as they prepare for the arrival of their child. Making an adoption plan for a child with Down syndrome is a loving choice and can be the right choice for some families. Adoptive families contact the National Adoption Awareness Program when they have a strong desire to adopt a child with Down syndrome.

The DSAH is collaborating with the DSA of Greater Cincinnati in the National Adoption Awareness Program for children with DS. Did you know there are over 250 families nationwide who are waiting to adopt a child with DS? Our DSAH will provide support and information to birth families who may be seeking alternatives to parenting a child with DS and are considering releasing the child for adoption. We'll also help families who'd like more information about adopting a child with DS. All contact will be confidential and no pressure will be placed on any family. We are committed to providing everyone with up-to-date, accurate, and non-directive information about persons with DS. If you have any questions, please contact Ann Fontenot at secretary@dsah.org or visit our affiliate's site http://www.dsagc.com/programs_adoption.asp . Adoption is an option!"

We are more alike than different
Meet some real people. Christopher, Moira, Christi, Mark. They’re ordinary folks, living average lives. One’s a student. Two work in retail. The fourth is a teacher’s assistant. One thing sets them apart, but should not – they all have Down syndrome. Watch the video, get to know them and why each says “we’re more alike than different.”

Inclusion Tip ~ Using a letter to introduce your child to a new teacher
You can make the inclusion process go more smoothly by giving a letter to your child's teacher which includes:

  • An introduction/Information about your child with "emphasis" on his strong points.
  • Goals/Suggestions (Listed in Order of Priority) of what you want to achieve in your child's inclusion - with suggestions on how to adapt the material.
  • Phone numbers and times that the teacher can reach you
  • More information on the letter inclusion tip can be found on http://www.loveandlearning.com/inctip.shtml

Kids’ College:
Many students (K-12thgrade) with special needs can be included in the regular “Kids College” classes of their choice with approval from the Youth Activities Coordinator. There are over 120 classesto choose from! The cost for Kids’ College classes is around $62 per class per session (8 1-hour class periods and each session is 2 weeks long for a total of 8 hours of instruction per class). For example, in Session 1, your child might wish to register for (4) one-hour Kids’ College classes (32 hours of total instruction), the cost would be around $62 x 4 classes = $248. The cost per hour comes out to $7.75 per hour! What an amazing value for a great learning experience!

SUCCESS:
The WCJC SUCCESS Program is designed to meet the needs of motivated individuals with developmental disabilities who wish to further their education and job skills. Some students with intellectual or developmental disabilities may benefit from attending the SUCCESS class, which has a more “hands-on” vocational and social skills focus.

Two SUCCESS classes will be offered by WCJC this summer. (SUCCESS classes are 3 hours/day for 6 weeks).

Youth SUCCESS is offered to youth, ages 14-18, starting June 15 and ending July 23rd, 3 hours per day for 4 days per week (MTW TH).

• Class time starts at noon and ends at 3:00 pm.
• Cost for 72 hours of instruction is $558.00
• Registration/Class #: 90773
Adult SUCCESS is offered to adults, ages 19 and above. The Adult SUCCESS class also starts June 15 and ends July 23rd 3 hours per day for 4 days per week (MTW TH)

• Class time starts at 8:00 am and ends at 11:00 am.
• Cost for 72 hours of instruction is $558.00
• Registration/Class #: 90774

Both SUCCESS classes will concentrate on “hands-on” skills required for successful employment in a Banquet and/or Restaurant establishment, including decorative napkin folding, floral arrangement, and table set-up/busing as well as practicing “soft skills” such as appropriate social skills in the workplace, interviewing techniques and appropriate communication with employers, other employees and customers. Some money handling and stocking skills may be practiced in the cafeteria area.

As an Extra Bonus (but within the 3 hour class period), students will have the option of also learning about basic home repairs such as fixing a leaky faucet, repairing/replacing a bicycle tire, assembling/replacing a door knob and learning about other light household repair jobs.

The Brighter tomorrow for pediatricians
Delivering a diagnosis of Down syndrome, either in utero or postnatally, can be very challenging for any physician. The purpose of this interactive tutorial is to provide physicians with current knowledge about DS, as well as the communication tools to adequately support families and prospective parents at the point of the initial diagnosis of Down syndrome.

As a pediatrician, you will want to know what the parents of the newborn may have experienced in the birth of their child. As an obstetrician, you will be better able to communicate with parents about critical in utero decisions if you are exposed to the complexity of issues and emotions associated with the birth of a child with Down syndrome.
